Lee Westwood is hoping he can earn one of the nine automatic qualifying spots for the European team ahead of the US Open

Lee Westwood is aiming to peak in time for next month's US Open as he vies for automatic qualification to Europe's Ryder Cup squad.

The Worksop-born player is currently down in 14th in the European Points ladder, but remains adamant he can peak at the right time to gain one of the four automatic spots for September's showpiece event at Gleneagles.

"I was talking to Paul last week and he would like me to qualify automatically and that's what I'm trying to do."

Europe captain Paul McGinley will take the top four players from the European Points list as well as the five leading players, not already included, from the Ryder Cup World Points list and will select three captain's picks.

Westwood claimed a seventh place finish at The Masters in Augusta in April before going on to win the Maybank Malaysian Open by seven strokes later that month.

Despite picking up the European Tour win in Malaysia, Westwood admits finding form ahead of the majors is vitally important if he is to climb the points ladder.

"The majors are what you try and peak for, they're three good venues this year and hopefully I can get my game in shape for those," he told Sky Sports.

Good shape

"I'm in pretty good shape now so ideally you'd like to peak at the start of the year and carry it on all the way through but certainly main focus for top players is the major championships."

Automatic qualification for the European team will close on August 31 following the culmination of the Italian Open and Deutsche Bank Championship.

McGinley will then reveal his three captain's picks on September 2, but Westwood is determined he will not have to wait.

"I was talking to Paul last week and he would like me to qualify automatically and that's what I'm trying to do," he added.

"I'm starting to play well; I'm just on the edge of it. I need a couple of good results and I should seal my place but I don't take anything for granted."
