Sergio Garcia has withdrawn from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth shortly after completing his opening round in the European Tour's flagship event.

The 34-year-old Spaniard, who posted a one-over-par 73, is struggling with a knee injury and will be hoping he can recover in time for next month's US Open at Pinehurst.

Garcia had teed-off on the back of some excellent form during the last seven months which has seen him win two titles and another three top-three finishes.

On day one at the West Course, Garcia posted 15 pars, two bogeys and a single birdie at the 18th.

Garcia said: "Unfortunately, it's the same thing that happened on Sunday at the Spanish Open.

"It felt better, I guess from resting it on Monday and Tuesday but I think from walking on it and going up and down hills today it's been pinching.

"With the US Open coming up, I don't want it to get worse. I'll go to the physio in Spain and see what he says.

"I'm sure I'm going to have to take some anti-inflammatories. Will probably have to do a little bit of work on it I'm guessing but I don't know exactly.

"I had an MRI done on Monday morning. They checked it out and said it was a small edema on the kneecap.

"I was hoping I was going to be able to feel fine throughout the week. But the way I felt on the last four holes - I didn't feel good at all."

His playing partners, Germany's Martin Kaymer and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, carded 68 and 72 respectively.

Denmark's Thomas Bjorn was leading the way following a record-breaking 62 on a day interrupted by inclement weather.
