Germany's Marcel Siem completed a wire-to-wire victory in the Trophee Hassan II, winning by three shots in Morocco.

But Siem's superb performance was not enough to secure a place at the Masters - strong finishes from Henrik Stenson and Russell Hendley at the Houston Open means he will not crack the world's top 50 on Monday.

Siem, who led after an opening round of 64, started the day with a four-stroke cushion and although Miko Ilonen piled the pressure on the leader regained control on the back nine.

He walked down the final hole with his four-shot lead restored and he could afford to bogey the last to finish with a round of 70 and a 17-under-par total.

Final leaderboard

GB & Ire unless stated

-17 M Siem (Ger)
-14 M Ilonen (Fin)
-14 D Horsey
-12 P Larrazabal (Spa)
-9 M Baldwin
-9 B Wiesberger (Aut)
-9 A Velasco (Spa)

Finn Ilonen had to settle in the end for a tie with David Horsey for second place, both shooting 69, the duo a further two shots clear of fourth-placed Pablo Larrazabal.

Ilonen birdied three of his first four holes and was briefly in a share of the lead with Siem, who bogeyed the second before recovering to pick up shots at the fifth and seventh and move to 16 under par after nine holes.

Ilonen also birdied the seventh to give himself plenty to play for on the back nine, but he dropped a shot at the 10th and then effectively blew his chances with a double at the par-three 12th.

By contrast, Siem held his nerve with birdies at 11 and 15 to see him safely across the line.

Horsey came home in 33 to burst out of the pack after an even front nine while two late birdies saw Ilonen climb back into a share for second.

Early bogeys also held back Larrazabal and once Siem saw off Ilonen's challenge a third European Tour title was his to lose.

At that point Siem's world ranking was 49 - enough for a first appearance at the Masters, and he said: "It's been my dream since I was a kid so if that comes true it will be unbelievable. It would be wonderful to play the Masters.

"I just want to be on that ground. I'm not going to cry but it would be very emotional."

It was not to be - the efforts of Stenson and Hendley in Texas later on Sunday meant they will be be above him in the rankings on Monday morning, leaving Siem 51 at best.
