Marcel Siem: Healthy halfway lead

Marcel Siem retained his lead at the Hassan II Trophy in Morocco as a second-round 68 put him three clear at halfway

The German, who opened with a 64, didn't quite produce Thursday's fireworks but his four-under round which featured seven birdies and three bogeys was enough to keep him clear at the top.

World number 72 Siem needs a win to have a chance of breaking into the top 50 who earn an automatic spot in The Masters and felt later his halfway lead of 12-under should have been bigger.

Talking about his 68 which left him three in front Finland's Mikko England and England's David Horsey, he said: "I think it should have been better than it was to be honest.

"The bogeys on four and seven were a bit weird because I was in the middle of the fairway there. But otherwise, this course is always tricky and I should accept the 68 because it's always nice to go under par after such a low round the day before because that can be quite difficult to follow up on sometimes."

Ilonen had seven birdies, an eagle, a bogey and a double bogey seven in an eventful 66 to be the first to post nine-under and he was joined in a tie for second by Horsey after the Englishman, who won this event in 2011, added a 67 in the afternoon.

The round of the day belonged to Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal, who fired an eight-under 64 to move up to solo fourth.

Larrazabal played with 2012 Ryder Cup skipper Jose Maria Olazabal, who couldn't contain his frustration at the last and angrily threw his club to the ground after missing the green with his approach. The bogey that followed left him outside the cut line.

Of the other players looking to make the cut for Augusta, Richie Ramsay enjoyed an improvement on his opening 74 with a three-under-par 69 and he was joined on one-under by fellow Scot and Masters hopeful Stephen Gallacher (68). The pair are a full 11 shots behind Siem though.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello endured a second miserable round of 75 including two double bogeys to miss the cut while Scott Jamieson's Masters hopes also ended as he followed up his 77 with a 78, which included a triple bogey at the par-five fifth.
