Stephen Gallacher: second European Tour triumph

Scotland's Stephen Gallacher claimed his second European Tour title with a three-shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic.

The 38-year-old nephew of ex-Ryder Cup captain Bernard was leading South African Richard Sterne by a solitary shot when he holed his second at the par-four 16th - his fifth eagle of the week - and that just about wrapped up the win.

Gallacher, who finished joint runner-up in this event last year and led by three overnight after a Saturday 62, carded a closing 71.

Final leaderboard

GB and Ire unless stated
-22 S Gallacher
-19 R Sterne (SA)
-17 T Olesen (Den)
-17 F Aguilar (Chi)
-16 M Fraser (Aus)
-16 L Westwood

Gallacher has played 404 events in 20 years on Tour, but his last win was back in 2004 at the Dunhill Links on home soil at St Andrews.

After a see-saw battle with five-time winner Sterne, the key to his victory was sinking that 110-yard wedge from the rough at the 16th.

Sterne had twice grabbed the lead on holes eight and 10, but then fell apart on the back nine with four bogeys in his final eight holes.

Gallacher, the world no 111, also holed out with a seven-iron from 175 yards in his opening 63 and closed his third-round 62 - the lowest round of his long Tour career - by finding the cup with a 40-yard bunker shot.

Despite a somewhat scruffy final round that included three bogeys - two at the first two holes - his 22 under par total equals the tournament record.

Chile's Felipe Aguilar and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen tied for third and England's Lee Westwood was joint fifth after hitting his second shot into the water on the par-five last and taking six.

Like England's Chris Wood, winner in Qatar last weekend, Gallacher climbs into the world top 60 and should now qualify for the 64-man Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona later this month.
