Chris Wood: Ended his wait for a European Tour victory in Qatar

Chris Wood admitted a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders after finally claiming his first European Tour triumph at the Qatar Masters on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who shot to prominence after successive top-five finishes at the Open Championship in 2008 and 2009, clinched victory in thrilling fashion with an eagle at the closing hole to pip George Coetzee and Sergio Garcia by one shot.

Wood secured his first professional win in Thailand last August, but admitted it was special to open his account on the European Tour.

"I knew it was going to be hard today, no matter how I played - to win on the European Tour, it's not easy," he told Sky Sports.

"I felt like I've been due to win for a couple of years, there's an enormous weight lifted off my shoulders today. I feel like I can go on and win more now."

Shaky start

Having led by three overnight, Wood made a shaky start with a double-bogey at the third hole which allowed the chasing pack to catch him, but the Bristolian held his nerve and came storming back to record a memorable success.

"I was a little bit in between clubs on three and didn't make a great swing, but after that it probably settled me down a little bit and I gave myself a few birdie chances after that and knocked a couple of nice putts in to give myself a bit of momentum," he continued.

"It was a nice way to finish! It feels good to pick up the trophy.

"I've seen a few mates get into those events at the end of the season and pick up the trophy and I've been waiting patiently for my turn and fortunately it's come today."
