World number 183 Ricardo Santos upstaged the big names in round one of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha.

Santos, who finished fourth in Abu Dhabi last week, continued his hot form with an opening seven-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over England's Anthony Wall, Scotland's Peter Whiteford and Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka.

Plenty of the pre-tournament favourites remain very much in contention however although several suffered late mishaps.

Louis Oosthuizen double bogeyed 18 to slip back to one-under, Martin Kaymer made a six at the same hole to finish at four-under while Jason Dufner missed from 18 inches at the last to also make bogey and end with a 71.

Justin Rose matched Kaymer's four-under 68 after a birdie at 18 but he was left to rue a one-shot penalty at 17 when his ball wobbled fractionally as he addressed a short par putt.

Others on four-under include Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson and Thorbjorn Olesen, who finished joint runner-up in Abu Dhabi, while Sergio Garcia is a stroke further back following a 69.

Manchester United fan Olesen will be hoping to bump into the likes Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes who were watching from the sidelines on Wednesday after the Premier League leaders flew out to Qatar for some winter sunshine training following their draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

Leader Santos is actually a Chelsea fan so, given his late-tee-time on Thursday, might decide to stay up late and watch his side in action in Wednesday night's Capital One Cup semi-final, second leg at Swansea.

Of his 65, Santos said: "My short game today was really amazing, especially the putts; I'm really happy. I just want to enjoy the season, and I want to go to The Race to Dubai, I think that's my target."
