Paul McGinley's appointment as Ryder Cup captain for the 2014 match at Gleneagles has been quickly welcomed by potential team members.

World No 1 Rory McIlroy had made no secret of his preference for the Dubliner and within minutes of the news, McIlroy tweeted: "Common sense prevailed in the end.... Paul McGinley 2014 European Ryder Cup captain!!! Couldn't be happier for him... Roll on Gleneagles."

McGinley's opposing captain Tom Watson was quick to take to Twitter to voice his opinion of the Irishman, saying: "Congrats to Paul McGinley on your R/C Captaincy. Looking forward to our future competition. You're a class act."

Ryder Cup specialist Ian Poulter, who is looking to make his fifth appearance next year, was also delighted: "Paul Mcginley Ryder Cup captain truly really happy that he has given the opportunity to captain the 2014 Ryder Cup team."

Paul Lawrie - who played a starring role in the victory at Medinah in September - tweeted: "Huge congrats to paul mcginlay ryder cup 2014 captain. Hope I'm in your team."

Italian Edoardo Molinari played in the 2010 match but missed out last year. He tweeted: "I am sure that Paul will be a fantastic captain! Well done to him...and now it's time to work even harder to be part of his team!"

Nine-time major winner Gary Player added: "Congrats to Irishman Paul McGinley on being selected as European Ryder Cup Captain for 2014. Team player, players choice, my best."

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond also sent his support, saying: "I'm sure the whole of Scotland will join me in welcoming Paul McGinley and congratulating him on his appointment as captain of the European team for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

"Paul is a model professional and has always been held in extremely high regard by the Scottish golfing public and he can be sure the whole country will be behind him and his team come September 2014.

"Of course, he already has a place in Ryder Cup history thanks to his winning putt at The Belfry in 2002 and we are all hoping he adds another incredible chapter to that history when the Ryder Cup visits the Home of Golf in less than two years' time."
