Recently unveiled American Ryder Cup skipper Tom Watson says he wants Tiger Woods in his side when hostilities resume at Gleneagles in 2014.

Woods has a mediocre record in the team event and, at Medinah in September, the 36-year-old managed just half-a-point from his four games.

Watson has also been critical of Tiger's on-course demeanour in the past but admits he would welcome him with open arms in Scotland.

The eight-time major winner said: "I hope Tiger is on my team.

"He's the best player maybe in the history of the game. He brings a stature to the team that is unlike any other player on the team.

"And if he's not on the team for any unforeseen reason - and I'm sure he will be - you can bet that he's going to be number one on my pick list.

"My relationship with Tiger is fine. Whatever has been said before is water under the bridge, no issue."

Masterful

In seven appearances in the Ryder Cup, Tiger has been on the winning side just once, with a 48% success rate from 29 games.

Watson, who will be 65 when the match takes place, added that Europe perform well at home because the biennial event is held on courses that are used on Tour.

He added: "I think the Europeans have done a masterful job of creating an element of winning simply by using the venues that they use.

"These players who play on Ryder Cup teams have played that course under a variety of conditions before.

"That gives them an advantage. The more you play a golf course the better you are at managing the course."
