Defending champion Rory McIlroy is set to miss the cut at the Hong Kong Open after a second round of 72 at Fanling.

The World No.1 headed into the event as an overwhelming favourite to defend the title he won 12 months ago in dramatic style by holing out from a bunker at the final hole.

However, an opening 73 on Thursday left him well off the early pace and he was able to do little better on Friday as he signed for a 72.

McIlroy did manage four birdies during his round, but also mixed in four bogeys and a costly double-bogey.

With the second round still in progress, that left him well down the field at five-over-par, some 14 strokes adrift of clubhouse leader Michael Campbell of New Zealand.

With the cut-line projected to fall at three-over, McIlroy will not now be around at the weekend to compete at a tournament in which he has had great success in recent years.
