Javier Colomo: First-round 64 at Hong Kong Open
Javier Colomo upstaged the star names at Fanling as he earned a one-shot lead after the opening round of the UBS Hong Kong Open.
The Spaniard, ranked 507th in the world, birdied five of his last seven holes to return a flawless six-under 64 as defending champion and world No 1 Rory McIlroy slipped nine shots off the pace.
Starting at the 10th, the 28-year-old carded an opening birdie and parred the next 10 holes before picking up five shots in six holes from the third.
A closing par earned him the outright lead ahead of veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez and Australian Andrew Dodt, who both bogeyed their last holes to finish on five under.
Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal posted an encouraging 66, hitting back from a double-bogey at the third with birdies at three of the next four holes.
Last week's Singapore Open champion Matteo Manassero is a further shot back, but his playing partner McIlroy has much work to do simply to survive the halfway cut after he laboured to an error-strewn 73.
The holder offset an opening bogey with a birdie at the third, but he dropped further shots and the sixth, 14th and 15th to end the day in a tie for 93rd.
