Luke Donald made an excellent start to the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Japan where an opening 65 earned him a share of the lead after the first day.

The world No 3 birdied four of the last five holes to cap a sparkling inward 30 and join Hideto Tanihara and Brendan Jones at the top of the leaderboard.

The Englishman dropped shots at the first and sixth holes either side of a birdie at the third, and birdies at seven and nine got him under the card at the turn.

Donald, making his first Japan Tour appearance since 2007, picked up further shots at 11 and 14 before finishing with three straight birdies.

The leading trio are two strokes clear of Koichiro Kawano and Shunsuke Sonada, while Donald's Ryder Cup team-mate Nicolas Colsaerts is four strokes off the pace after a solid 69.
