Matthew Guyatt has set the early pace at the Australian Masters after opening up a two-shot lead in the first round.

The Australian carded a seven-under 65 at Kingston Heath, with Adam Scott, Ian Poulter and Michael Hendry heading up the chasing pack.

Scott registered five birdies on the back-nine to join defending champion Poulter and Hendry on 67.

However former champion Stuart Appleby and Ryder Cup star Graeme McDowell had to settle for rounds of 71.

-7 Matthew Guyatt
-5 Adam Scott
-5 Ian Poulter
-5 Michael Hendry (Nzl)

Guyatt was delighted with his day's work but knows there is still a long way to go in the event yet.

"It was a nice day," said the 37-year-old.

"I have never been in this position before. It's what you do all the hard work and practice for. I am not going to get ahead of myself.

"It's the first day of four and we all know it takes four good days to win the tournament, particularly when you look at the calibre of those guys."
