It has been confirmed that the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China will become part of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup schedule from next season.

The tournament, whose 2012 renewal was won by Ian Poulter over the weekend, is the only one of the four annual World Golf Championship events not to be held on American soil.

The move to award it FedEx Cup status means that prize money earned by competitors will count as official money on the PGA Tour.

In addition, the winner will also gain a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour or the opportunity to become a full-time member should he not already be one.

In a further boost, it has been announced that HSBC have extended their sponsorship of the tournament until 2015, while the total prize fund will climb from $7 million to $8.5 million from next year.

That rise will bring it in line with the three other WGC events; the Accenture Match Play Championship, the Cadillac Championship and the Bridgestone Invitational.

Meanwhile, from 2013 the event will return to Shanghai's Sheshan International Golf Club on a permanent basis.

This year's edition - which Poulter won by two shots - was staged at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong.
