Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano secured the sixth European Tour title of his career as he held off South African Garth Mulroy to win the Italian Open by two shots.

The Spaniard posted a closing eight-under-par 64 at Royal Park in Turin, where he made his move around the turn with six birdies in seven holes from the eighth.

Overnight leader Mulroy closed with a 67 but came undone on the 17th where he bunkered his approach at the 468-yard par-four hole.

With a poor stance inside the greenside trap, Mulroy could only run his ball off the back edge of the green from where he did pretty well to get down in two for a bogey-five.

Fernandez-Castano posted a routine par to take a one-stroke lead down the last where the 32-year-old found the middle of the putting surface at the par-five hole in two shots.

Mulroy, who was second to play from the fairway on this 540-yard hole, pulled his second into sand and splashed out to 25 feet.

The 34-year-old made par, leaving Fernandez-Castano to calmly take two putts from around 30 feet for his final birdie of the day - and his second success in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Italian Matteo Manassero excited the home crowds with a second straight 65, which moved him into a tie for third with Gregory Bourdy.

The 19-year-old covered the back nine on Sunday in just 30 shots and over four days at Royal Park he played the same stretch of holes in 14-under-par - and without a single bogey.
