Bernd Wiesberger: seven birdies in his final 10 holes

Home favourite Bernd Wiesberger shot a closing 65 to win the Lyoness Austrian Open at Atzenbrugg by three shots.

The 26-year-old from Vienna made seven birdies in his final 10 holes at Diamond Country Club, as overnight leader Thorbjorn Olesen fell away on the final afternoon.

Wiesberger covered the final nine holes in just 30 shots and he sealed a famous victory on home soil on the 72nd green where he sank a birdie putt from 25 feet.

Victory saw Wiesberger become the second Austrian to win his national open after Markus Brier in 2006. It came just three months after his first European Tour victory at the Ballantine's Championship.

A jubilant Wiesberger said the victory had made it "the best day of my life so far".

"It seems like it went my way, especially the last two holes," he told www.europeantour.com.

"I had such a great country and such great fans backing me. I'm very proud to be following in such big footsteps [as Brier]. I'm sure I'm not going to be the last home winner."

Wiesberger had started the final day four strokes adrift of Olesen who had led after rounds one, two and three.

But the Dane, who was chasing his second European Tour title of the season, closed with a two-over 74 having earlier carded rounds of 64-68-68.

Olesen, a winner in Sicily four months ago, played the first 13 holes of his final round in one-under only to card three bogeys in the last five.

He ended up five adrift of Wiesberger in fifth place, while Ireland's Shane Lowry and Thomas Levet of France shared second place after rounds of 66 and 68 respectively.
