Former world number one punished after incident on 12th green

Tiger Woods has apologised after being fined for spitting during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday. The European Tour confirmed on Monday that Woods had been found guilty of breaching their code of conduct after reviewing television footage of an incident on the 12th green. The American was fined, although the amount was not made public; the range for minor breaches of the code is from £250 to £10,000. Woods, who was reportedly paid £1.8million to appear in the event, acknowledged his culpability through his Twitter account. He posted: "The Euro Tour is right - it was inconsiderate to spit like that and I know better. Just wasn't thinking and want to say I'm sorry." Just one shot off the lead going into the final round, Woods posted a closing 75 - his worst score in a regular European Tour event in his professional career - to finish in 20th. The 14-time major champion has now gone 17 tournaments without a win for the first time since he left the amateur ranks way back in 1996.
