Sunderland are on the hunt for a new manager after
sacking Paolo Di Canio following a miserable start to the season.
Defeat to West Brom at The Hawthorns on Saturday left the Wearsiders bottom of the Premier League with just one point from their opening five games.
The club confirmed on Sunday evening that they had "parted company" with Di Canio but it is understood that Saturday's 3-0 loss, which saw the Italian face up to angry fans at the whistle, and a subsequent meeting forced Stadium of Light chiefs to act.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Sunderland AFC confirms that it has parted company with head coach Paolo Di Canio this evening.
David Haye
David Haye has been forced to
postpone his eagerly-awaited heavyweight clash with Tyson Fury after suffering an injury.
Haye picked up a deep cut in training on Friday and the fight, scheduled for Manchester Arena on Saturday 28 September, has had to be put on hold.
He was training with sparring partner Filip Hrgovic - a 6ft 6" Croatian - when he was cut, and the wound required six stitches. Haye said: "Gutted isn't even the word.
St Helens
Leeds kept their hopes of defending the Super League title alive after a late Danny McGuire drop goal
gave them a thrilling 11-10 victory over St Helens at Headingley.
The Rhinos surged into a 10-point lead thanks to tries from Kallum Watkins and Joel Moon but the visitors fought all the way back to level things up as Willie Manu crossed the whitewash twice.
Saints, who have lost to Leeds in four of the last six Grand Finals, then had the chance to edge in front heading into the closing stages but Jordan Turner sliced a difficult conversion wide of the posts.
With the final minutes ticking down the contest became a race to convert the one-pointer, and after Jon Wilkin scuffed his attempt, McGuire coolly slotted over after being fed the ball from Kevin Sinfield.
Liverpool
A difficult week for Liverpool after starting the new Premier League season with three straight wins saw that 100 percent start ended before also losing their first game of the campaign.
Former Anfield man Jonjo Shelvey first came back to haunt his old club as he had an eventful game, scoring one and setting-up the other for
Swansea in a 2-2 draw on Monday night - although he also had a hand in both Liverpool goals.
The Reds looked to bounce back with an expected win against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday, but
Dejan Lovren's second-half header was enough for the Saints to stun Liverpool in a fully deserved 1-0 success.
Mauricio Pochettino's side were also the last team to beat Liverpool back in March, and Saturday's win against what is truth was a dire display by Brendan Rodgers' side - who now have plenty to think about after a great start to the new season.
