After Rory McIlroy ruptured his ligaments playing football, we look at others who injured themselves in another sport.

McIlroy has been ruled out of appearing at next week's Open after the world No 1 suffered a freak injury, in his own words, suffering a "total rupture" of his left ankle "in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday".

A spokesman for McIlroy said he is able to walk short distances with a protective boot, but he isn't the first to suffer injury while participating in another sport...

Glenn McGrath

Having dismantled the England openers during the first test of the infamous 2005 Ashes series, McGrath was set to once again lead the Australian attack at Edgbaston, only to suffer a freak injury in the warm-up.

Playing touch rugby on the outfield with his team-mates, the fast bowler stepped on a stray cricket ball, rupturing ligaments in his right ankle. He’d go on to miss the next three test matches, as the hosts won the series 2-1.

James Anderson

The bowler ended up on crutches after turning his ankle during a football warm-down during the second test against New Zealand in 2008.

Anderson was still able to put weight on his foot, recovering in time to bowl 15 overs in the second innings.

Phil Mickelson

When Mickelson was one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour, the American crashed in to a tree while skiing, breaking his left leg and ruling him out of action for several months, including the 1994 Masters.

After having a pin inserted just below his hip to just above his knee, Mickelson eventually made a full recovery and was back playing within three months.

Ernie Els

The Big Easy had to pull out of the big-money PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 2012 after spraining his ankle playing tennis with his daughter. He's not the only golfer to have injured himself on a tennis court, with Darren Clarke having to miss the 2013 Masters after pulling his hamstring while playing with his sons.

It wasn't the first time the South African injured himself off the course, with Els once ruled out for five months after rupturing knee ligaments tubing behind a speedboat.

Wayne Rooney

The England and Manchester United captain caused controversy earlier this year when a video emerged of him boxing with former team-mate Phil Bardsley in his kitchen.

A blow from Bardsley floored Rooney who fell backwards onto the floor and, after the video was aired, Rooney celebrated a goal against Tottenham by shadow boxing and then pretending to hit the deck.

"I was in a house with some friends. Obviously I was caught on the wrong end of a punch, but I wasn't knocked out like it was reported," Rooney said.

Svein Grondalen

The Norwegian international footballer probably saw nothing wrong when he put on his running shoes and stepped out for a training run.

However, while out jogging he collided with a moose and was forced to withdraw from Norway's next fixture as a result.

David James

The former England goalkeeper has had well-documented injuries in the past, once pulling a muscle in his back while reaching for the television remote control, but James has also brought himself unwanted headlines taking part in other sports.

James injured his shoulder while out fishing, causing himself pain when he tried to land a monster carp.

Joba Chamberlain

Detroit Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain knows McIlroy's pain having suffered an ankle injury of his own.

Back in 2012, when on the books of the New York Yankees, Chamberlain went trampolining with his son but came down awkwardly, suffering an open dislocation of his right ankle which saw him sidelined for several months.
