Emirates Golf Club is staging the tournament for a 22nd time.

As yet, no player has successfully defended the oldest professional Tour title in the Middle East, with Ernie Els and Tiger Woods the only golfers to have won the tournament more than once.

Woods is a two-time winner while the big South African has emerged triumphant on three occasions at Emirates.

However, neither are in town this week when the Spanish contingent will hope to make it four victories in a row for their country.

Since the Tour returned to Emirates in 2001 - after two years at Dubai Creek - most eventual champions have started strongly.

Only two of the last 12 winners were more than three shots adrift after 18 holes.

These were Mark O'Meara in 2004 and Alvaro Quiros seven years later.

In fact, four of the most recent eight champions were leading after the opening round ......
