The US Open returns to The Olympic Club in San Francisco for the fifth time in its history.

The Lake Course, which sits close to the Pacific Ocean, first staged the USGA's flag ship event in 1955 when little-known Jack Fleck defeated Ben Hogan in a play-off.

Further Opens were staged there in 1966, 1987 and most recently 14 years ago, as Lee Janzen lifted the famous old trophy for a second time.

The Lake Course is a traditional US Open venue with narrow, tree-lined fairways and small well-bunkered greens.

The putting surfaces have changed from poa annua to bentgrass, otherwise little has altered since 1927 when the course was laid out by Sam Whiting.

And, as usual, the famous Californian course is expected to provide a tough test for this week's second major championship of the season.

So who may challenge for the title?

Jim Furyk: It's been nine long years since the 42-year-old American tasted major success. He has performed pretty well this year - eight top-25s in 12 starts - although without a victory since September 2010.

Sergio Garcia: Remains one of the most consistent major performers but still without a victory to his name. The 32-year-old Spaniard enjoyed a top-three finish in Sweden last weekend.

Matt Kuchar: Back in 1998, when he had considerably more hair than he has now, the then-amateur finished in a tie-for-14th at The Olympic Club. He was a winner at Sawgrass last month and tied-for-3rd at Augusta during April.

Lee Westwood: Will hope that last Saturday's victory in Stockholm will be the springboard for major success on the West Coast.

Tiger Woods: A two-time winner this season - including two weeks ago in Ohio - Tiger will be confident of claiming his first major title since 2008.
