Colin Montgomerie was unable to defend his US Senior Open title, having to settle for second as Jeff Maggert claimed a two-shot victory in Sacramento.
Beginning the final round one stroke back, the Scot, who beat Gene Sauers in a three-hole play-off last year, made three birdies on the front nine on his way to a blemish-free 66.
As overnight joint-leader Maggert made a lightening start by opening with three successive gains on his way to a six-under 65, Montgomerie was unable to make further progress over the closing holes.
Despite dropping a shot at the 16th and finding the bunker at the last, Maggert saved par at the last to give the 51-year-old a second senior major title of the year.
Bernhard Langer had moved top of the leaderboard after draining a 35-foot eagle putt at the first, but posted four bogeys in a two-under 68 to end the week tied third alongside Grant Waite.
65-year-old Tom Watson closed an impressive week five shots off the pace, one adrift of Billy Andrade after the American carded the lowest round of the week.
A front nine 39 from Miguel Angel Jimenez left the Spaniard one under for the week, while Ian Woosnam posted four bogeys in the space of six holes in a final round 73.
