Ian Poulter one behind Kevin Na in Crowne Plaza Invitational

Ian Poulter: Well-placed to claim Colonial success

Ian Poulter will tee off in the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational just one shot behind leader Kevin Na.

The Englishman started the third round at Colonial two shots adrift of the American in second place and halved the deficit with a two-under 68 as playing partner Na settled for a 69 in damp conditions.

The pair shared the lead at the turn after Poulter birdied the first and seventh as Na dropped a shot at the fifth after birdieing the third.

However, Poulter, who opted to play in Forth Worth this week rather than in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, then slipped up with a double-bogey six after four-putting the par-four 10th

He recovered to reach the top of the leaderboard once again with birdies at the 11th and 15th, but Na kept his nose in front at the end of the day thanks to birdies at the 11th and 17th, either side of a bogey at the 15th, which left him on an 11-under 199 for the tournament.

Both the 15th and 17th holes were pivotal with Poulter holing a 32-foot birdie putt at the former as Na two-putted from six feet after his approach missed the green.

Poulter had a 15-foot birdie putt at the 17th that slid by the hole, but Na holed his 14-footer to reclaim the lead.

The Englishman then also missed a seven-footer for a birdie at the 18th, but he still has a great chance to prove a point to his critics by claiming a victory on Sunday.

Poulter, who has never won a stroke-play event in the United States, was voted along with Rickie Fowler the most "overrated" players on the PGA Tour in an anonymous poll of players conducted by Sports Illustrated last month.

Fowler answered with a victory two weeks ago at the Players Championship and Poulter, who has 1.89 million Twitter followers, could also now respond.

"Do you think I pay a lot of attention to what people think? 1.89 million people? I mean, seriously. Come on," Poulter said. "It's water off a duck's back. It has actually become quite funny, to be honest, so I take it a little bit tongue-in-cheek.

"I was pleased with how I played, just a little mishap there on 10. It didn't break, and then a few more putts it took to get in the hole."

American Charley Hoffman leads the chasing pack in third place on nine under after shooting a four-under 66, with his compatriots Chris Kirk (65) and Brandt Snedeker (66) tied for fourth on eight under.

Defending champion Adam Scott of Australia (66) and Masters champion Jordan Spieth (67) are both on six under, five shots off the lead.

Heavy rain is forecast overnight and into Sunday and plans have been made for threesomes and early tee times off both the first and 10th for the final round.
