Jordan Spieth holed out from 20 feet on the final green in Texas to grab a share of the lead after 18 holes of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Speith, the recently-crowned Masters champion, is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Kevin Na, Boo Weekley and Ryo Ishikawa who all posted six-under-par 64s, while Englishman Ian Poulter is just one shot adrift.

21-year-old Spieth made his final putt from just off the fringe, to complete his bogey-free round that included six birdies in total.

On a day when bad weather delayed proceedings, the Dallas-born Speith completed his round in fading light at 8pm to the delight of his home state fans.

Spieth holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the first, then started the back nine with a 22-footer at 10 and ended the day with another from distance at 18.

Ishikawa, 23 from Japan, and Weekley also avoided any bogeys while Na’s solitary lapse came at the 18th – after starting his round on the 10th tee.

Despite completing his day's work in difficult light, Spieth admitted: "We couldn't have had better scoring conditions today.

“Just the wind died down, and you could just throw darts, and they were landing and stopping. I'd like to play golf in this weather the rest of my life."

As for Poulter, who fired a 65, his only bogey also came at 18 otherwise he would have made it a five-way tie for the lead.

The 39-year-old left his approach in a greenside bunker, before splashing out off the back of the green and he needed a single putt just to drop one shot.

Poulter has opted to play in Fort Worth, rather than compete in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the flagship event of the European Tour.

The highlight of his round was a 34-foot birdie putt on the par-four third hole.

In all, the leading 25 players after 18 holes are separated by just three strokes.
