Andy Sullivan remains hopeful of featuring at next week’s BMW PGA Championship, despite being forced to withdraw from the Open de Espana through injury.

The two-time European Tour winner pulled a shoulder muscle while playing the par-five 18th during the first round at Real Club de Golf El Prat, only managing to complete another six holes before retiring three over for the day.

Sullivan later tweeted that he is due to have a scan and physio on the injury on Friday, with the world No 63 keen to be back in action in time for the European Tour’s flagship event.

The Englishman is one of three players due to feature at Wentworth that was unable to complete their first round on Thursday, with compatriot Simon Khan and two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal also missing out.

Olazabal withdrew before the start of play due to a reoccurrence of the wrist injury that hasn’t seen him feature since Augusta, while Khan lasted 16 holes before ending his round early with a knee problem.

Khan later tweeted: “Managed nine holes then knee went on 10th tee, hit a foot behind it. Tried to play back 9 but no good. Hope to be fit for PGA.”
