Dustin Johnson managed to hit three eagles in his second round at Augusta to leave him tied third at seven under.

Dustin Johnson became the first player in Masters history to card three eagles in the same round as he moved into contention on Friday.

Johnson reached the halfway stage on seven under, seven shots off the red-hot pace being set by fellow American Jordan Spieth, but it was his play on the par fives that made the headlines.

The big-hitter bounced back from a double bogey at the opening hole to eagle the second and he repeated the dose at the eighth.

After a birdie at the long 13th, Johnson secured his place in the history books at the 15th where another eagle made it seven under on the round at the par fives alone.

But Johnson took it all in his stride after the round, as he said: "It wasn't like I was hitting it any farther. It was normal shots that I've had in the past."

Now he has to focus himself for the weekend challenge, already knowing it is going to be tough to make up the deficit on Spieth, who set a Masters record by making it to halfway at 14 under.

"I always feel good at Augusta. I think the golf course sets up well for me. I just never really played that well here," he added.

"But coming in this year, I felt really confident in my game. I've been playing really good golf and I'm continuing to play good golf.

"I haven't played my best golf the last two days, but I've played pretty good. Hopefully it's just going to keep getting better.

"Just need to go out and play two good, solid rounds. Tomorrow is an important day. Just need to play another good, solid round and put myself in a position to have a chance to win on Sunday."
