World No 1 Rory McIlroy is expected to play New England Patriots QB Tom Brady at Augusta next week as part of his Masters preparation.

Reports in America suggest that McIlroy, who is in action at this week's WGC-Cadillac Championship, will head to the home of the Masters for a couple of practice rounds with his father Gerry and a few friends - including Brady.

The four-time Super Bowl winner is known to be a keen golfer, playing off a single-figure handicap as well as regularly featuring at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

New England Patriots duo Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are set to miss this year's event, but appeared in the same foursome last year.

Brady missed this year's event in California having guided the Patriots to victory in Arizona less than a fortnight earlier, but has frequently appeared alongside his head coach Bill Belichick in Pro-Am events.

McIlroy, who after this weekend is only schedule to make one more PGA Tour appearance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational ahead of the Masters, will use the trip for some extra practice ahead of the first major of the year.

Speaking ahead of the Masters, the four-time major champion said: "I don't really feel any more anticipation this year than I do any other year. After Bay Hill, I'm sure I'll start to think about it a little bit more."

The Northern Irishman can complete a career Grand Slam with a Masters victory this April, having added Open and PGA Championship wins last year to the US Open title he won in 2011.
