Rookie Ha-Na Jang has taken charge at the season-opening Coates Championship on the LPGA Tour.
The 22-year-old South Korean carded a second round seven-under-par 65 to leap four shots clear of the field at Ocala in Florida.
Although a number of players still need to complete their second circuits – after darkness curtailed play early on Thursday – Jang’s position is unlikely to come under threat during the remainder of the round.
Jang stands at 12-under for 36 holes and, on Thursday, rolled in eight birdies at the expense of a single bogey which came at the sixth.
She hit 15 greens in regulation and needed just 26 putts, and she ended her round by rolling in a 25-footer for birdie.
Her nearest challenger going into Friday is world No 3 Stacy Lewis who had been one of three co-leaders after 18 holes.
Lewis offset two bogeys with four birdies en route to a two-under 70 which was four shots higher than on Wednesday at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club.
She said: "The greens are so tricky. With some pin locations you have to hit it to the right spot. It is just a matter of staying patient."
Lydia Ko, the world No 2, shot a three-under 69 to move into a share of third place, while No 1 Park In-Bee is 14 strokes off the pace following rounds of 71 and 75 and in a tie-for-45th.
The leading European is Spaniard Azahara Munoz who is tied-for-third after a second day 71.
