Rory McIlroy believes he’s made "a nice start" to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic after firing a six-under 66 in the opening round.
The world No 1 carded seven birdies during his round, with only a final-hole bogey preventing him going level at the top of the leaderboard with early pacesetters Nicolas Colsaerts, Andy Sullivan and Lee Westwood.
McIlroy, who is joined on six-under by playing partner Martin Kaymer, believes the lack of wind at the Emirates Golf Club was a factor in the promising start.
“I’d be disappointed if I didn’t shoot anything below 68 today, especially with the conditions, and 66 is a nice start,” McIlroy said.
“I think par would be about the way I’m driving the ball, trying to take advantage of the par fives and there are a couple of shorter part fours that you have chances on as well.
“I’d like to see it blow a bit to be honest and make it more of a challenge. It’s still a challenging golf course but it would be nice to play in some conditions a little difference to this!"
The Northern Irishman has finished second in his last three events, and is looking to secure his fifth consecutive top-10 finish at the venue where he clinched his first professional win six years ago.
McIlroy made a flying start start to his opening round with birdies from is opening two holes, but believes he still has room for improvement.
He added: "I’ll probably go and hit a few balls as I wasn’t happy with a couple of things out there, maybe hit a few putts, go back to the hotel to the gym and watch a bit of the golf whenever I’m on the bike.”
