Rory McIlroy favourite to win PGA Tour Player of the Year award

Rory McIlroy is the hot favourite to add another accolade to his vast collection when the PGA Tour announce their Player of the Year on Wednesday.

McIlroy, who won the prestigious award two years ago, is the front-runner again this season after winning two majors either side of his first World Golf Championship victory during a remarkable run of form over July and August.

The 25-year-old kick-started his season with victory at the European Tour's flagship BMW PGA Championship in May, and he finished no lower than 23rd over the remainder of the summer.

After cruising to the Open Championship title at Royal Liverpool, he pipped good friend Sergio Garcia to the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational crown and then made it three consecutive wins as well as two majors in a row in the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

McIlroy finished top of the Money List before falling just short of landing a $10million bonus when he managed only third place in the FedExCup Play-offs, during which he posted another three top-10 finishes.

Among the other nominees for the Player of the Year award is McIlroy's Ryder Cup team-mate Martin Kaymer, who enjoyed a purple patch during May and June.

Impressive win

The German followed up an impressive win in the Players Championship with a runaway victory in the US Open at Pinehurst, where he opened with two rounds of 65 before cruising to a dominant eight-shot win and his second career major.
