Ryan Palmer joined his fellow American Kevin Chappell and England's Lee Westwood at the top of the US PGA Championship leaderboard with a six-under-par 65 at Valhalla.
The 37-year-old has three PGA Tour wins to his name but he has never finished higher than 10th in a major.
He looks on course to improve that record, though, after making a flying start in Kentucky with five birdies in his first nine holes after starting on the 10th hole.
Further birdies at the fifth and seventh briefly gave him the outright lead on his own on seven under, but he dropped his first shot of the day on the eighth when his par putt caught the edge of the hole and span out.
Palmer told Sky Sports: "I had some good feelings. I had some good work with my teacher Andy Smith and we put in some good work earlier in the week.
"We got here Sunday and played before taking Monday off. But he told me yesterday I was ready and I took his word for it and I felt great on the range warming up and got off to a good start with my first two birdies at 10 and 11.
"The bogey on eight was a little disappointing but I can’t be disappointed overall at all. I am pretty happy.
"I am going to come out tomorrow like it was today and we will just see what kind of happens with the weather.
"Hopefully it will hold up in the morning and hit about 12.30 when I am finishing. Hopefully we can keep our momentum going.
"It's nice to get a low round especially in a major like this."
