Donald Trump has agreed to purchase the Turnberry Resort in Scotland, one of Britain's most picturesque golfing venues.

It has been reported that the American property tycoon paid less than £40m for the resort which boasts three courses - including the famed Ailsa links - and a hotel.

Trump is planning to invest millions of dollars in the hotel and make it one of the most luxurious in Europe.

The 65-year-old is said to have cut 'a cash deal' with Dubai-based owners Leisurecorp to buy two 18-hole courses and one nine-hole course.

While the Ailsa lay-out was built more than 100 years ago, the Kintyre course was only opened in 2001.

Ailsa has hosted The Open four times in 1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009.
