Tiger Woods will make his first start of 2014 at one of his favourite venues at this week's Farmers Insurance Open.

The world No 1 returns to Torrey Pines in California where he has won seven times, including his last major triumph in the 2008 US Open.

In 13 appearances at La Jolla, Woods has also finished runner-up once and chalked up a total of 12 top-10 finishes at a stroke average of 68.61.

His love of the track is shared by Open champion Phil Mickelson, who joins him in the field after finishing joint second behind Pablo Larrazabal at the Abu Dhabi Championships.

Only a triple-bogey seven at the 13th hole of the final day prevented the 43-year-old returning to 'the Pines' on the back of a victory set up by a stunning third-round 63.

Despite the howler, Mickelson is in fine form ahead of his 25th appearance in the event, the last 24 having yielded three victories and two runners-up spots.

The American duo's love of the course, however, is not matched by former world No 1 Lee Westwood who was involved in the shake-up for the 2008 US Open which saw Woods pocket his 14th major title.

One that got away

"Obviously I played well all that week, but it still feels like it was one that got away," said Westwood, who just missed out on the 18-hole play-off in which Woods beat Rocco Mediate.

Westwood, who now plays most of his golf in the States, is keen to break a run which saw him fail to record a victory on the PGA Tour during 2013.

"Last year was pretty average. I gave myself a few chances to win tournaments, most notably the Open Championship and probably Quail Hollow," he said.

"I played consistently well, but not good enough really. Normally I would play in the Middle East on the European Tour, but last year I felt pretty tired so I decided I would cut back on the jet lag a little bit and not do the early Middle East swing.

"This is obviously a tournament I haven't played for a long time (since 2004), and I've been looking forward to it."
