Frenchman Edouard Espana set the early pace on the opening day of the 108-hole European Tour Qualifying School in northern Spain.
Playing on the Stadium Course at Girona, Espana posted a bogey-free eight-under-par 62 to take a two-stroke lead over six players.
These included Englishmen Richard Finch and Jamie Elson both of whom carded 64s on the same course.
Another player tied-for-second is Swede Jens Dantorp who was the only member of the leading dozen golfers to fire his six-under-par score on the more difficult Tour Course.
The top 25 pros and ties will earn their Tour Card for the 2014 season and, in a bunched leaderboard, the low 27 players are all within four shots of the lead.
As for some of the bigger names having to play six rounds in this event, 2008 Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson is seven off the pace and in a tie-for-58th.
But former Tour winners Rhys Davies, James Morrison, Oliver Fisher, Kenneth Ferrie and Nick Dougherty all failed to break par.
And second-placed Yorkshireman Finch is satisfied with his opening round.
He said: "I would have happily taken that.
"It was nice to get out there as the weather was superb with not a breath of wind.
"You approach this week the same you would most events, except you try not to do too much and wear yourself into the ground on practice days.
"You've just got to play one round at a time and go from there."
