Fred Couples has named 20-year-old Jordan Spieth as one of his two wild cards for next month's Presidents Cup match in Ohio.

The American skipper has also opted for Webb Simpson who missed out on automatic selection on Monday when Zach Johnson holed a 25-foot putt on the final green of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The selection of Spieth and Simpson means huge disappointment for Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson who were the other main contenders for the team.

Spieth is enjoying a remarkably successful first full season on the PGA Tour that has yielded a victory, a play-off defeat and one other runner-up finish.

Still an amateur last year, his earnings so far for 2013 have passed $3m.

Simpson, meanwhile, finished 11th in the qualifying table and despite not winning a tournament since last year's US Open is an experienced match-play competitor.

The 28-year-old played in the 2011 Presidents Cup match, as well as last year's Ryder Cup and 2007 Walker Cup.

Couples said of Simpson's selection: "With Webb being in the top 10 for two years, only to get pushed out with one putt, there was no way I could leave him off."

Leishman & de Jonge get nod

The International team's captain Nick Price has chosen Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge and Australian Marc Leishman as his brace of wild cards.

And Price acknowledged that he faced a hard time making his choices: "Yesterday was probably one of the toughest days of my life.

"I had it down to three guys: Marc, Brendon and Tim Clark. To try and separate the three of them and only pick two was an exceptionally difficult task."

The Americans have lost just one of the nine previous matches - since it began in 1994 - with one other being tield.

The teams for Muirfield Village (October 3/6):

United States: Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker, Bill Haas, Hunter Mahan, Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth.

International: Adam Scott, Charl Schwartzel, Jason Day, Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen, Hideki Matsuyama, Branden Grace, Graham DeLaet, Richard Sterne, Angel Cabrera, Brendon de Jonge, Marc Leishman.
