Europe maintained their Solheim Cup lead after Saturday morning's foursomes thanks to an incredible hole-in-one from Anna Nordqvist.

The visitors began the day 5-3 up but that lead had been trimmed to 6.5-5.5 going into the afternoon's fourballs after Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall won Europe's only whole point of the morning.

After a short birdie putt at 16 had put her and Hedwall level with Morgan Pressel and Jessica Korda, Nordqvist delivered the killer blow by holing her seven-iron tee-shot at the par three 17th.

Nordqvist's ace put Europe 6-3 up overall but, with Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer taking a nailbiter for the home side, and Michelle Wie holding her nerve to take another match, that soon became 6-5.

But Catriona Matthew landed a nervy final-hole putt to secure a half for herself and Caroline Masson against Brittany Lincicome and Lizette Salas, and keep Europe just ahead.

Nordqvist's story was the headline, though, especially after she and Hedwall had been a hole down with five to play before their late brilliance.

It had appeared as though their performance had echoed down to Azahara Munoz and Karine Icher too, with the duo pegging back Lewis and Creamer having trailed by four as they started the 11th.

They levelled going into the last but carded a horror six on the par-four and watched their rivals take the match with a birdie three.

That made it 6-4 and Wie then held it together to sink a winning putt when paired with Brittany Lang against Suzan Pettersen and Beatriz Recari - the latter had spurned a putt to take the match to the final hole.

It had looked at that stage as though America would level at 6-6, but Matthew holed a fine putt on 18 as herself and Masson came back from two-down with two to play to salvage half a point.
