Ross Fisher: Early leader at the Wyndham Championship

Sky Bet

A blemish-free round helped Ross Fisher in to a share of the lead at the end of day one of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

Fisher carded a six-under-par 64 to sit on the top of the pile alongside American Chris Stroud - with the duo a shot clear of a group of eight players including defending champion Sergio Garcia, Trevor Immelman and Robert Garrigus.

Fisher, who is in his first year on the PGA Tour, picked up four birdies and an eagle on the par-five fifth, when he hit his approach shot to seven feet.

The Englishman told pgatour.com: "My manager said, 'You've got nothing to lose. Just go out there all guns blazing and see what happens'.

First round leaderboard

"I know what I've got to do, and I've just got to go enjoy it, and if it's meant to be, it'll happen.

"I don't want it to end here."

Great

Neither he nor Stroud will be comfortable, though, with Garcia among the men breathing down their necks.

The Spaniard missed just one green as he began his title defence in style, but he was taking nothing for granted.

"It was a great round today, but it's only Thursday," he said.

Stuart Appleby, who is one of a number of players looking to secure his place in the FedExCup Play-offs, was in a group of five players on four under, while Fisher's compatriot, Greg Owen, was two under.

Brian Davis and Paul Casey were level, while David Lynn was two over and Padraig Harrington, who is four places play-off qualification, had a day to forget at three over.
