Rob Lee: Backed Jason Dufner despite him being 50/1
Jason Dufner was the deserved winner of the US PGA Championship says Sky Sports pundit Rob Lee, who backed the American despite him being 50/1 to take the title.
A superb 68 for a 10-under total earned Dufner a two-shot win to claim the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday, two years after conceding a five-shot advantage with four holes remaining.
And Lee says that while Dufner was not only the deserved winner, claiming the third win of his career, it was his loss to Keegan Bradley two years ago that spurred his success.
"It was fantastic," Lee said. "He did definitely play the best golf of the week so he's a deserved winner.
"I backed him, yes I did. Him Adam Scott, (Charl) Schwartzel and Rory McIlroy I backed because he played so well at the Bridgestone. He'd had one top-10 all year then at Bridgestone he was terrific.
"Obviously he finished a gap behind Tiger Woods, everybody did, but from tee to green he was brilliant and that's what you need in Rochester here in New York."
And on the impact of his disappointment of two years ago, Lee added: "I think it's always good if you're a good player and you go in and think that you're owed. I think he thought the game of golf owed him one because of his loss to Keegan Bradley.
"It's nice to see one of the good guys win. It might be a springboard to more."
Defending champion McIlroy finished seven shots behind Dufner, representing his only top-10 finish this year.
And Lee believes the Northern Irishman is nearly back to his best.
"The feeling's coming back, and when Rory gets the feeling, he's a very very dangerous player. I really do think McIlroy is right around the corner from something very big."
