The 25-year-old Korean, who has already won the Kraft Nabisco Championship, LPGA Championship and US Women's Open during 2013, finished the day just three off the lead held by Morgan Pressel and Camilla Lenarth but let a great round slip.
After reaching six-under-par through 10 holes, she later dropped four strokes in five holes, before nailing a seventh birdie on the closing hole.
Park dropped shots at 13 and 17, while suffering a double-bogey at the 16th.
No golfer, either male or female, has won four professional majors in the same calendar year - although Mickey Wright and Tiger Woods have won four in a row over two seasons.
The world No 1 admitted afterwards: "It was a real rollercoaster and I am a little disappointed.
"I had a couple of bad drives and bad putts. I was a little bit nervous on the first tee because I know what I'm playing for.
"But I birdied the first from 10 feet and started so well that I felt I was coping well with the pressure.
"I'm going to work on my game this afternoon and I'm definitely looking to improve over the next three days."
Park made all her birdies from inside 18 feet before missing the green at the 13th and then finding a greenside bunker at 16 which she ended up three-putting for a double-bogey six.
