Colin Montgomerie will make his debut in the Senior Open at Royal Birkdale alongside Mark O'Meara and Fred Couples.

Monty is eligible for the tournament for the first time this year after turning 50 last month and will tee off alongside the two American stars at 1.50pm.

Montgomerie told the Daily Record: "I've played three Opens at Royal Birkdale, obviously not a Senior Open Championship, but I am really looking forward to it.

"I would love to try to contend. I'm under no illusion as to how good the standard is but if I can come in and challenge them they will enjoy that and so will I.

"It's about time I won a major championship so let's hope that one might just be in the offing.

"But if not I will still love the competition of it."

Couples is the defending champion after winning at Turnberry on his first appearance in the event last year while O'Meara won the Open Championship title at Royal Birkdale in 1998, just three months after claiming his first major when landing The Masters at Augusta.

O'Meara, 56, also won the Lawrence Batley International at Royal Birkdale in 1987 to claim his first European Tour title, and shared third place with Couples in the 1991 Open Championship at this week's host venue.

Another former winner of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, Tom Watson, will also be able to draw upon some happy memories.

Unique feat

The 2014 United States Ryder Cup Captain won the last of his five Claret Jugs at Royal Birkdale in 1983, and 30 years on he is bidding for a unique feat of winning a third Senior Open title on a course where he previously won an Open Championship.

He scores his previous 'doubles' at Turnberry and Muirfield.

Watson begins his campaign at 09.20 alongside 1989 Open champion Mark Calcavecchia and South African David Frost.

Bernhard Langer, the 2010 Senior Open Champion, tees off ten minutes later at 09.30 alongside two-time major champion Sandy Lyle and 2010 US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin.

Sky Sports have live coverage over all four days of the tournament.
