John Huston is the early pacesetter after the opening round of the Senior Players Championship in Pittsburgh where former European No 1 Colin Montgomerie made his American debut on the Champions Tour.

Monty, who turned 50 last week, made a solid start to his senior career in the States with a 69, which left him four strokes behind leader Huston.

The 52-year-old from Florida carded an opening five-under-par 65 at Fox Chapel to end the day one shot clear of four players.

On a day dominated by Americans, home players fill the top-10 spots - and 18 of the leading 20.

Huston, who teed-off on the 10th, made a slow start to his round before covering an eight-hole spell in six-under-par, while playing his second nine holes in just 30 shots.

Fred Couples, Duffy Waldorf, Fred Funk and Russ Cochran are tied-for-second and leader Huston said: "I really didn't make anything and then all of a sudden the last 10 holes I made a bunch of putts."

As for Monty, he overcame a double-bogey six at the eighth to end the round tied-for-21st, along with Englishman Roger Chapman - and well in contention.

Montgomerie admitted earlier in the week that this tournament has been on his radar for a long time: "I've got a new hunger for the game now and I've been working all year towards this date."
