World No 1 Inbee Park is just one stroke of the pace following the opening round of the US Women's Open in Southampton, New York.

The South Korean is targeting her fourth major crown and she moved in contention after carding a superb five-under-par 67.

Inbee picked up four birdies in her last nine holes at Sebonack Country Club to trail compatriot Kim Ha-neul by a shot.

"I played very good today," said the 24-year-old, who has already won the Kraft Nabisco Championship and LPGA Championship this season. "I hit the ball very good, didn't miss many fairways or greens.

"I was able to attack some pins where the USGA was a little generous on us, a lot of tees were moved up.

"So instead of hitting like five-irons, we were hitting nine-irons, and that made the course much easier.

"I was actually able to go for some pins and give myself a lot of opportunities today. I made a lot of putts and didn't leave much out there."

Fellow Korean Kim In-kyung is also in contention after carding a 68 to finish the day alongside Lizette Salas, Caroline Hedwall and Anna Nordqvist.

Paz Echeverria and Maude-Aimee Leblanc are a shot further back while defending champion Choi Na-yeon and world No 2 Stacy Lewis were among a group of 11 players tied on 71.
