Watson had his only bogey of the day at his opening hole, the 10th, but thereafter produced two birdies on each half of the course to build on the good work of his opening 63.

Reed and Harrington both carded their second straight 66 to get to eight under, while Tommy Gainey (67), Hunter Mahan (71), Nick O'Hern (66) and Tag Ridings (65) are all one further back on seven under.

First-round leader Charley Hoffman followed up Thursday's 61 with a 73 that included a double bogey seven at the 13th to slip back to six under overall.

Defending champion Marc Leishman was round in 70 to remain at four under, one behind last week's US Open champion Justin Rose, who remained in touch with the leaders after adding a round of 68 to his opening 67.

Meanwhile, Lee Westwood narrowly avoided missing the cut after carding 73, leaving the Englishman just one shot clear of the dividing line on level par.
