Brett Rumford celebrated a "special feat" after earning back-to-back European Tour victories with a dominant performance at the Volvo China Open.

The Australian journeyman followed up his dramatic play-off win at last week's Ballantine's Championship with a four-shot victory at the Binhai Lake Golf Club in Tianjin.

Rumford's second title in eight days, and his fifth European Tour victory, swept him to the top of the Race to Dubai after being outside the top 100 two weeks ago.

"As with last week I am kind of speechless at the moment, it's quite surreal," said the 35-year-old.

"It's really hard to try and go back to back, it's the first time I've actually played the week after a win so I am more than pleased. It's quite a feat, it's very special."

Rumford's lead had been trimmed to one when Mikko Ilonen birdied 10 and 11, but the dogged Australian hit back with a birdie at 12 before he drained two huge putts from outside 40 feet on the next two greens.

"They were a couple of really nice putts," Rumford added. "You don't really expect to make them, it's just a lag, but halfway they looked in and that was the turning point.

Pressure

"Mikko put the pressure on me through 10 and 11 and it was always going to be close but it's amazing this game, it turns so quickly."

Rumford almost threw away victory in South Korea last week when he double-bogeyed the 17th and then holed an eight-foot par putt on the last before claiming the title with a superb eagle on the first extra hole.

"Last week on 17 it turned for the worse and now here I am just trying to defend, to limp my way home and finish it off. I made some pretty ordinary golf swings to tell you the truth but it is a completely different mindset from the rest of the round.

"It's the first time I've been in that position and hopefully I will learn from it and get stronger for next time."
