Trevor Fisher: Chasing a first European Tour victory

Trevor Fisher was delighted with his stunning nine-under-par 62 that swept him to the top of the leaderboard at the half-way stage of the Joburg Open in South Africa.

The South African was joined in a share of first place with compatriot Richard Sterne as home players filled five of the top six places.

Fisher's 62 included an eagle and seven birdies over the West Course at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club having teed-off three strokes off the pace.

And the 33-year-old, who is a seven-time winner on South Africa's Sunshine Tour but not the European, said: "It was a great day.

"Everything just happened for me and I sank the putts I needed to sink. I was patient. I walked slowly and did everything slowly."

Sterne's 65 came on the tougher East Course and the 31-year-old is taking nothing for granted: "It won't be easy over the weekend.

"The players who are five or six back can catch us. Charl's (Schwartzel) there, George (Coetzee) is due a win, so it's a long way from being over."

Schwartzel, who is making his first appearance for seven weeks following injury, is five off the pace and in a tie-for-fourth.

He is also a two-time winner of the tournament and he admitted: "I had five and a half weeks of doing nothing and then I started practising a bit.

"My ball-striking is good enough but I'm not putting as well. Those short ones are the ones you have to make to win tournaments."
