Little known Scott Langley is the early leader at the Sony Open of Hawaii in Honolulu.

The 23-year-old American rookie blazed his way around Waialae Country Club in a stunning eight-under-par 62 to snatch a one-stroke lead from another first year card holder Russell Henley.

Langley from Florida kept a bogey off his card en route to reaching the turn in just 30 shots before adding three more birdies on the back nine.

The high spot of his excellent opening round came at the ninth where he rolled in a 55-foot putt for an eagle three.

He also holed from 30-feet for a birdie at 16, while Henley - also just 23 and playing in the same three-man group as Langley - posted eight birdies in his seven-under 63.

Three years ago Langley and Henley, coincidentally, tied for low amateur in the US Open at Pebble Beach.

Langley said: "I was pretty nervous starting out. I settled down after three or four holes and made some nice birdies early. That got me in a nice rhythm for the day.

"Looking back at all my rounds thus far, this might be the best one."

Two more established names, Scott Piercy and Tim Clark, are one stroke further adrift while last week's winner on another Hawaiian island, Dustin Johnson, had to settle for a 70 and was tied-for-71st.
