Belgian Ryder Cup star Nicolas Colsaerts shares the lead with American Bill Haas after day one of the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa.

On a day of tough scoring at the Gary Player Country Club, none of the 12-man field managed to shoot in the 60s as they took it in turns to get bitten by the lengthy par 72 at Sun City.

Haas looked to be coping best as he moved clear on four-under after 15 but bogeys at 16 and 18 dropped him back into a tie for the lead.

Colsaerts was out in level par 36 after one birdie and one bogey but then birdied 10 and 11 to move to two-under.

Six straight pars kept him there and he had an eight-foot putt at the last to take the lead on his own but his birdie try stayed left and he matched Haas' two-under 70.

Lee Westwood, bidding to win the tournament for the third time in a row, is just one shot back alongside in-form South African Louis Oosthuizen and former Open champion Paul Lawrie.

Westwood bogeyed four and 12 - the latter after missing from inside three feet - but birdies at three of the four par fives kept him right in touch with the leaders.

Germany's Martin Kaymer mixed five birdies and five bogeys in a round of 72 and is tied sixth on level par alongside Charl Schwartzel, Carl Pettersson, Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson, who birdied the final two holes.

Justin Rose is 11th out of 12 after a hat-trick of bogeys took him from two-under to his eventual finishing score of one-over but he'll still fancy his chances from just four back. Propping up the field is world number 201 Garth Mulroy, who had two double bogeys in a round of three-over 75.

In the Champions event, played over the same course but from forward tees, Bernhard Langer leads by three from Mark Calcavecchia and Jay Haas after carding a four-under 68.
