Ian Poulter's incredible battling qualities shone through as he maintained his unbeaten record at Medinah with a two-up victory over Webb Simpson.

The Englishman did not have the lead until the 17th, and a high-class recovery at the last proved too much for the US Open champion to overcome.

Poulter was pumping his fists early after chipping in for birdie at the first, only for Simpson to pour in a 15-footer for the half.

But Poulter then made a mess of the second and fourth, losing both to pars, but a well-judged bunker escape set up a winning birdie at the long fifth.

However, he handed a hole back with another bogey at the next, which he recovered when Simpson failed to recover from a pulled drive into the trees at seven.

Simpson then hit an incredible shank off the tee at the short eighth, and Poulter parred to level the match before the American regained his composure - and the lead - with a birdie at 10.

But Poulter found another clutch putt from 12 feet at the 12th, and he produced a miraculous recovery from the woods on 16 to clinch a crucial half in par.

Simpson then flew the green at 17 and could not match Poulter's rock-solid par, and the Englishman piled on the pressure with a hole-high approach to the last.

Simpson's second finished 50 feet beyond the pin, and after his birdie putt slid wide, he conceded defeat as Poulter celebrated his 12th win in 15 Ryder Cup matches.

"This was a team performance and the team have done an unbelievable job," Poulter said later after the comeback was complete. "There was a buzz in the team room last night that didn't feel like we had a four-point deficit.

"For some reason, everyone was calm. Everyone was cracking jokes. We just felt we had that tiny little chance and the boys have proved it today and made history. It has been unbelievable.

"My captain picked me to come and play and I owe it to him, and Seve, to be here today. It's pretty special."
