World number three too far back after scraping into the weekend
Lee Westwood admits the chances of ending his long search for a major title are remote after narrowly scraping into the weekend at the Open Championship.
The world No 3 reeled off 16 pars and carded one birdie and a bogey in a second-round 70 at Royal Lytham that left him 13 shots behind leader Brandt Snedeker.
After making the halfway cut with nothing to spare on three over, Westwood conceded he was probably too far back to contend on Sunday, but he feels he can still land an elusive major crown after several near-misses.
"I'm a contender to win most majors," he said. "I play nicely most weeks. And over the last 12 or 13 major championships I've given myself lots of good chances.
"So I'm going to have another chance in three weeks' time at the PGA Championship. It's just one of those things. You turn up, you try and play your best. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."
On his chances of lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday, Westwood added: "I would say it's remote with the weather forecast.
"I think from the cut line you'd need it to blow pretty strongly both days, and I think Saturday is forecast to be pretty calm again.
"Shoot 65 on Saturday and the two lads on top shoot level themselves, you're four and five down, with a windy day coming up.
"You could be out early, like you saw at Muirfield a few years ago. Guys went out and shot 65s and 64s early, and in the afternoon it played like a par-78. That's the interesting thing about links golf."
