Webb Simpson: Up to a career-high fifth in the world rankings
American Webb Simpson has climbed to a career-high fifth in the world rankings on the back of his US Open triumph at Olympic Club on Sunday evening.
The 26-year-old from North Carolina shot a final round of 68 to clinch his maiden major title by a single stroke in San Francisco.
Simpson - who started the final day four shots behind the leaders - finished one shot clear of compatriot Michael Thompson and 2010 champion Graeme McDowell.
His victory saw him climb nine places in the latest round of rankings, rising from 14th to fifth.
Above Simpson, the top four remained constant despite the fact that numbers one and two, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy, missed the halfway cut in San Francisco.
Lee Westwood stays in third after ending in a tie for tenth, while Tiger Woods is fourth having falling away disappointingly over the weekend at Olympic Club with rounds of 75 and 73.
